While we were staying in Buenos Aires, Argentina we visited Uruguay which is a stone’s throw away distance from Buenos Aires. With a one-hour ferry trip you can reach Colonia del Sacramento in Uruguay from Buenos Aires. We spent 5 days in Uruguay and visited one of the oldest towns in Uruguay; Colonia del Sacramento, the capital of Uruguay; Montevideo and Miami of South America; Punta Del Este. We found many common things between Uruguay and Argentina. Uruguay was a little bit expensive than Argentina though.
My first visit to Buenos Aires and South America was in 2006 by myself. I only had stayed 4 days in Buenos Aires which captured my heart with its architecture, cuisine, friendly people and Tango. Last year I had the chance to visit Buenos Aires once again with my sister and a friend of mine. Three girls, we really had fun. This time I almost stayed a month in Argentina and visited Tigre, Cordoba, Mendoza, Salta, El Calafate and El Shanten besides Buenos Aires.
After a very interesting Chile trip, our next stop was Brazil. The main reason for our Brazil trip was the Carnival. My sister, a friend of mine who flew from Istanbul to join us, and I spent 15 days in Brazil. We visited Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Recife, Salvador de Bahia and Iguazu Falls. We really enjoyed the Rio and Recife carnivals of Brazil and its amazing nature. We were there during the carnival period so the prices were higher than normal time especially for accommodation. But Brazil is not the cheapest country in South America. After spending three days and nights in Uyuni Salar which was an unforgettable experience, our trip ended at Portezuelo del Cajon (also called Hito Cajon) border which is between Chile and Bolivia. From this border, San Pedro de Atacama is 45 kilometres (28 miles) away. If you are going to cross this border, you should arrange your transportation ahead.
Last year my sister and I headed to Bolivia after travelling in Peru. Same as before, we had very limited time for this beautiful country and we only spent a week there. We got the chance to visit the capital La Paz and Uyuni Salar Region. La Paz is the world’s highest administrative capital. The Salar de Uyuni is the world’s largest salt flat which is 10,582 square kilometres (4,086 sq miles). Its area is almost equal the size of Lebanon. To see enough of the Uyuni area, you should spend at least 3 days to see the main attractions. You can read all of my previous posts, articles, pictures and experiences about Bolivia using this link, and for more travel expenses and travel costs information, check out my Vacation Cost Series.
Last year my sister and I were travelling in Peru. We only spent one week in Peru where we should have spent at least 2 weeks. We were in the capital city, Lima, Ica, Cusco, Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu and Puno. Machu Picchu was really a fascinating place. We spent one day in Machu Picchu, walked around the city and enjoyed the magnificent views. You can read all of my previous posts, articles, pictures and experiences about Peru using this link, and for more travel expenses and travel costs information, check my Vacation Cost Series.
After Cuba our next destination was Colombia. My sister and I were traveling in Colombia between 18 and 24th January 2015. We stayed 4 days in Bogota and 5 days in Cartagena. We enjoyed both of those cities but our favorite was the pearl of Caribbean, Cartagena. At least a week is enough for visiting Cartagena and its surroundings. In the Dominican Republic, we found a cheap flight to Havana and wanted to visit Cuba before the lifting of US embargoes and the invasion of American tourists. We had only 5 days to see Vinales, Havana and its surroundings. We stayed in Havana and made daily trips to Havana surroundings.
My sister and I headed to the Dominican Republic after Antigua and Barbuda. We spent 11 days in this beautiful island on the Caribbean sea. Unfortunately we didn’t have time to visit its neighboring country, Haiti or Puerto Rico. We found the Dominican Republic moderately cheap after Antigua and Barbuda. We really liked its green nature, great beaches and smiley people. You can read all of my previous posts, articles, pictures and experiences about the Dominican Republic using this link, but this post is more about budget details for a the Dominican Republic trip.
Last year my sister and I started a new year in Antigua. It was such a great feeling, being in the Caribbean island, sleeping on a catamaran, jumping into a blue sea and having the first shower of the year in the Caribbean Sea. You can read all of my previous posts, articles, pictures and experiences about Antigua using this link, but this post is more about budget details for an Antigua trip.
